Can we have an ENGLISH anthem?!

Bloody sick and tired of God save the Queen every time an England team takes to the sporting arena. Not only is it a total durge but its the anthem of the UK and NOT England! If Scotland and Wales can have their own anthems why cant we? Surely Jerusalem or Land of Hope and Glory are far more apt and certainly more uplifting! Bout time we sorted this out!

NO! I think that 'God save the queen' is brilliant, the one by the Sex Pistols that is.."She ain't no human being".
I'm a republican anyway, so I will not sing that dirge on principal.

When an English gold medal is won at the Commonwealth games, the anthem played is 'Land Of Hope And Glory'.

Yes, I agree. Just about every other country's national anthem is singing about the land - hence the reason wht it's called a national anthem.

I fail to see how singing about a person is called a NATIONAL anthem. It's like God Save The Queen, but fuck the rest of us.

Totally agree with you but from a different perspective.

If another of the home nations tried to play the UK anthem as their own there would be absolute uproar but England (and you may not but many Englishman think England is the whole of the UK) are allowed to do it.

Land of Hope and Glory would be good.

This playing of the UK anthem is annoying but nothing like as annoying as Ireland being allowed to have 2 anthems when they play. If I was an opposing team I'd just line up and kick the ball off before the 2nd one - same as I'd do when the New Zealanders do their silly haka thing.

Ireland and indeed South Africa have two anthems for political reasons.

Not just the Kiwis - all the South Sea Islanders teams have their own version of the haka. I think it's all a bit gay really. All that thigh slapping and tongue wiggling is sooooooooooooooooo butch !duckie!

And this makes it OK then???!?

Agree with you about all the Haka versions though. Very gay and perhaps an even more insulting word than gay is suitable? Pathetic?

And a total waste of time - just let's get on with the game.
