South Africa - Going Down The Pan?

This report on South Africa suggests that since the ending of Apartheid poverty in South Africa has doubled ? i.e. the country is going down the nick. And that?s without factoring in the huge rise in robbery and violent crime. So, could South Africa end up like Zimbabwe and all the rest of the failed postcolonial African States?

I thought it already WAS down the pan, Dibs.
I've never been there myself, but the place sounds like a bit of a hell-hole.
Up until 2003-ish, I used to know a family here in Germany - he was German, she was South African, they had a kid together and she had a lad a few years older from a previous marriage in South Africa.
For some reason she was desperate to go back permanently, and in the end he gave in and off they went - after which I lost touch with them so I don't know how they fared.
But some of the things they used to relate about the place were quite mind-boggling - like having to live in gated communities (or at the very least having to have some decent bars on all your windows), no-go areas, violent car-jackings that frequently involved shootings, sprawling shanty towns, white folks often carrying guns in the glove compartment "just in case" ...
It made the UK sound like a model utopian society.
As an outsider looking in, it seems to me that the ANC has for far too long been overly obsessed simply with the issue of race and "black power", without paying sufficient attention to the country's ills (like poverty, aids, widespread illiteracy and spiralling crime).

A doubling of the poverty rate from 2 to 4 million in a population of 45 million......hardly earth shattering dibble
I suppose your trying to say under the former white fascist government system everything was hunky dory?
After apartheid it was always going to get worse before it got better
Might even take decades, nobody really knows do they?
South Africa has always been a violent place since apartheid regime was introduced. If you want to commit suicide, just walk the streets of Jo'burg
Can recall seeing a program about the South African police and their flying squads. The homes they visited were built like jails and that was 10/15 years ago

IMHO the whole of Africa is to be avoided. The place is full of nasty animals, nasty climates, nasty diseases and nasty people..shit hole.I read that BA Crew take their own stocks of blood rather than trust to the local stuff so rife is HIV.

I think they've got what they wanted and they're still not happy.
