Fed up of Turkey so I'm on the verge of ordering a big goose (traditional xmas meal). Never tasted it before though, so what's it like? Greasy I hear, but more flavoursome.

Everyone having the usual turkey, or something else?

I can get an 11lb goose (free range) for just ?60, inc. delivery. Ok, it's twice the price of Turkey, but I'm fed up of turkey.

There'll be me, my parents, sis & hubby + 2 kids and my brother. Should be enough. We'll have the turkey on New Years day instead.

There's another place I found in the Scottish borders (closer to home?) and about ?10 more expensive because the delivery isn't included:

Trouble is, I've never tried Goose, and neither have my sis & brother, or kids, so I'm wavering on whether ?60 will be wasted.

I'm sorry, but I'm pissing myself laughing a some of those comments. Have you read them? Ok, I agree with it being cruel to keep them in battery cages, and we should all consider free range stuff (and most would if it wasn't so expensive), but the stuff about the turkeys having 'low morale' around Christmas just cracked me up big time! !laugh!

Eating meat for one day a year isn't going to kill you or save the animals from low morale(thats a corker)

Gonna follow this thread. Never tried goose (very nearly typed never had a goose but decided not too) Allways wanted to try it. Was really suprised when I first saw one being served, to discover that it was in fact brown meat!! I always imagined it would be like turkey. If you have ever seen one being carved im sure you will agree it looks fantastic!!

I was a vegeterian for more than 10 years. Since then I have tried most of Gods wonderfull creature's but alas goose has always been out of my price range.

A little tip I can give you though S"ts"S is use the fat too cook your roasties!! Me mum always does and they are to die for!!

Its my second xmas being single (well unless the office party goes well) so im having Xmas back at the old home stead again this year. I thought my Mum was gonna experiment a little this year. But just come off the phone and she has informed me that the turkey is ordered. Seeing as im on a diet and have eaten nothing but soup for two months and wont be eating any thing other than soup untill Xmas,im sure it will taste as if God him self cooked it!!

In short.....go with the Goose I doubt you will be disapionted chap!!

Most game like Pheasant, Partridge, Duck and Goose do have a fair amount of fat on them (mainly because they migrate) and a very strong unique taste which is kind of 50/50 whether you could eat it or not, so bear that in mind. I myself cannot touch Pheasant or Partridge .

Personally I don't eat Turkey I always have a Roast Beef or Lamb Joint, or failing that a nice big Mince Round, Homemade Peas, and Roast Tatties.
