What's happened to Fog?

These days we don't get as much fog, or indeed freezing fog, than we used to get in my youth. Yes, we get a bit here and there - but it's not the real "hard" fog that featured regularly during the seventies.

I miss it. Those all day fog banks that never cleared. The fog so thick you literally could not see your hand in front of your face. You'd go out in it and you'd get the fog "sticking" to your hair and clothes. Ah, memories.

Fog- like biscuits and sweeties- is not as good as that in bygone eras.

However, a lot of industrial smoke probably contributed to 'Trumpty-fog of yesteryear', giving it higher density.

Nope.

Smog happened before the Clean Air Act came into effect. I've seen pictures and old film of smog from the 1950's - awful.

The fog I'm referring to happened in the 1970's. Sometimes it would lay for days and we'd hear reports that airports had been closed becuase of the fog's intensity.

Since the beginning of this century we've never had really long periods of 1970 style fog. Yes there's been the occasional morning that we've had thick fog, but it's all very mild and tame and disappears very rapidly.

Ah, global warming - less fog and even less snow. What's going to happen to our winters now?

Oh that's good - I'll get razor rash more often then.
