Just read this warning that there are 7 security updates due to arrive very soon so I'd be turning those auto update downloads off unless you want an unexpected nightmare

ive never turned off auto update deuce i thought you were meant to install all updates,thats what ive done ever since i got first pc a couple of years ago
would i be better not installing updates?

You still get notified but it requires your permission to install

I firmly believe that Windows Automatic Update is for chumps, and I've said so for years: go ahead and let Microsoft notify you when it wants to install something on your computer, but don't blindly allow the 'Softies to install whatever they want. Follow the instructions in any of my books to disable automatic updating, or click Start | Control Panel | Security Center and take it from there.

In general, I apply Windows Defender updates and Outlook Junk E-mail Filter updates as soon as they're available. Why? Microsoft hasn't screwed up any of those too badly - and the one bad Junk E-mail Filter update was patched quickly. You're better off applying those updates than letting them slide for a week or two.

Many of you have written asking about non-critical updates. Unless you have an immediate, painful, obvious reason to install one of them immediately, I'd avoid them like the plague. Microsoft has really screwed up several hardware patches, in particular. Don't trust Microsoft to deliver hardware updates; go to the hardware manufacturer's site and install them manually. If your computer stops working, you only have yourself to blame!

Microsoft need a service pack up the arse, with added garnish.

I've always accepted and installed the Windows security update patches. I was told that this is required so that your computer will have additional protection. When I have had them installed my laptop does run more smoothly.

If your happy with that Trumpy then don't change

All I will say is that programmers get it wrong on occasions(the bigger the patches the more likelyhood of an error)and thats when it would be nice to have someone else test the patch and then give you the green light to install or wait for microsoft to fix it

I still get the alert and when the patch has been proven to work I install it

Probably does depend on what erm Version of Windoze you have installed ... but it is wise as Buttsie says to not allow automatic updates, just let microsoft notify you that updates are available and then google the update to see if any problems have arisen (before you install). This is what is known in the trade as hedging your bets and letting some other cunt be the Microshaft Guinea Pig.

Yes that has been a monthly update on Vista Ultimate since it was released ... though it has never found anything mind. For that matter neither has Windows Defender - which means either Vista is very good or Defender is very bad.
