I caught on BBC4 a few weeks back a programme originally shown a few years ago, about the writing and recording of Fairytale Of New York. The Pogues were a great band, and their version of Dirty Old Town works better than The Dubliners.

MacGowan may be a disaster to look at, and a major league pisshead, but the guy can write. He's kind of like Europe's answer to Tom Waits.

Myself and Ms. Sydney went to the Henieken festival in Leeds about ten years ago and one of the acts was...ta da Shane McGowan and the Popes. In front of about 50,000 people he drawled, good eeeeeeevenin' Maaanchesteer, er.. sorry mean't Leeds. He was f******g brilliant and as a finale, teamed up with Kirsty MaCall to sing "Fairytale of New York. Bliss.

Yeah, it was the same doco, Magoo. And the police pipe band were actually singing the Mickey Mouse Club song. Jakey pisshead just about sums Shaun up as a person; as an artist, much more than that.

Kirsty's mum said that playing with The Pogues had helped her beat the extreme stage fright she suffered.

Shell, you're right, it was A New England. She did some brilliant stuff, including a dreamy version of The Kinks' Days. A sad loss.
