In a word NO

If you go back to the vhs versus betamax wars there was never a dual/hybrid player as I am hearing about there being today

There was never a gaming console which doubles as a player for both formats as there is today

Personally i think both forms will exist side by side because
both have strengths & weaknesses but neither is perfect
and above all else theres too much money been invested by both sides

Gives a perfect illustration of what is really going on
even if you don't believe there is corporate collusion going on

Hi Deuce

I think you're both wrong.

Firstly, for Dizzy say that Blu Ray is a rogue standard is total bollocks.
It is a future proof Java-based platform that can be updated as time goes on, including all players with hardware updates.

As for both formats existing side by side?
uh-uh
Remember Betamax?

At the end of the day, it's the the studios who will decide the fate of the formats as they release the movies
.....and already it's starting to look choppy for HD-DVD because of the lack of studios.....even Michael Bay went apeshit when he heard that Transformers wasn't going to to be released on Blu Ray.

It used to be that way in the 70's and 80's because the main money was made through the cinema's and TV. These days most of us have hardware that play their products in our homes, and the big studio's earn more from worldwide dvd sales that cinema tickets.

Years ago, you may have had to wait 2 years before a blockbuster was released on VHS, but these days these new releases in the cinema are in HMV within 6 months (or less if it's a flop). I really think that in a few years time, new release blockbusters will be released on dvd in the same week as the cinema release.

Because of this, and because consumers increasingly have 42" widescreens and surround sound etc, I think the big studios are being driven by hardware capability, rather than hardware being driven by the studios.

Possibly, and with smaller releases the benefits would probably be felt all round, but both the studios and the cinema chains would want to hold back on the bigger releases due to the profit allocation. When a film is first realeased the larger percentage goes to the studio (that all-important first weekend etc). In time, it switches to the cinema chains, who of course are pretty keen on big films being screened for weeks/months on end. With ticket prices being what they are, having the DVD on sale wouldn't do them much good.

Indeed. This, from today's IMDB, reminds us of another factor:

Comcast Chairman/CEO Brian Roberts surprised attendees of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas Tuesday by unveiling a new cable modem capable of downloading a two-hour movie in high definition in just four minutes. The same film would take more than six hours to download via a high-speed DSL modem, he said, or seven days via a dial-up modem. Roberts said that he expects millions of the modems to be delivered to Comcast subscribers by the end of the year.

If downloading whole films catches on with the mainstream, we could find a situation similar to CD vs MP3 scenario.

Blu Ray is a standard as far as the BDA are concerned (Blu-ray Disc Association).

HD DVD is a standard as set out by the DVD Forum (formerly the DVD Consortium).

The difference between them is that the DVD Forum are an Industry Standards Organisation which the BDA is not.

The DVD Forum is responsible for setting out all official DVD formats HD or other and has hundreds of member companies not just the 12 or so that the BDA has.

You might be interested to know that Sony and half the Blu Ray camp are members of the DVD Forum and so that is why they are rogue as they basically decided that the standard that 95% of the Forum agreed on was not good for them and so they just went off and did their own thing like a sulking child.
