"The BBC will move several major departments - Children's, Sport, New Media, Five Live and Research and Development - out of London to Salford by 2011.

Staff at the five departments - as well as BBC personnel at the current BBC Manchester building on Oxford Rd - will relocate to MediaCity:UK, a new purpose-built site at Salford Quays close to the Lowry."

Great. but knowing some of the BBC presenters that have spent all thier time trying to get out of Manchester, they must be gutted they are having to move back, still the blow will be softened by generous re-allocation packages, swish apartments already bought for them,,etc etc.. the traffic presenters will have to learn a whole new vocabulary, 'eye up' there's a problem on't A6 between Levenshulme and Stockport chuck.

This is ancient news. At last someone "down there" has noticed the quality those Up North can produce and has had the balls to admit there is more to the UK than London

It's, allegedly, a cost cutting exercise by the BBC. How much money will they save - bugger knows yet?

Not Ancient MM, they were not moving thier techies, or the whole of some dipartments, but now they are, just announced friday. But I totally agree Manchester has a lot to offer and I have seen the site opposite the war museum, it should be stunning.
