I doubt Fisher would ever have beaten Spasky if it wasn't for his paraniod mind games, last I had heard he was broadcasting from the far east. A one off.

You must be right steve, I wasn't even alive when this happened and don't currently know that much about chess,I have only read stories about the match and thats where a draw my conclusions, what would have been an interesting match would have been Fischer against Kasparov in there prime, but the decades seperated them.

Can't say I'd followed his career since the great match in the early 1970s, but some of his choices since then seem rather bizarre, to say the least, and his reported views on 9/11 would take a lot of explaining. I'm fairly sure someone, don't know who, will chirp in at any moment to give us a detailed rundown of his psychological history.

He'll take those Russian boys and play them out of town . . . "

Thank you for that, Leo.
What defeated Spassky was that Fischer totally surprised him, in virtuoso fashion, by playing many opening lines that nobody had seen him play before. He also did not play the same opening line twice throughout the match (in a major match like this, a player will usually practise only one or two openings and use them, or even just one of them, for the whole match).
In the latter part of the match, Spassky - in desperation - tried to do the same thing, but to no avail.

There's only one person qualified to tell us, ATS.
