Actually rifling is pretty difficult to do, so most home made or converted guns are smooth bored, but they work well enough at short range, which is all these hoods use them for. It is possible to build simple handguns just using very basic metal working equipment, it's not a great secret, the resistance used to do it in Europe during the war.

If there is a demand for guns by criminals, it will be supplied. In the Fifties, because of the war, England was chock full of war souvenirs. A guy I used to know built up a small arsenal as a kid. But by and large criminals didn't use them, because they feared the consequences, ie the rope. I am no fan of capital punishment, but I do believe this to be the case.

Slight correction required here. Not every metal worker could make a gun barrel, it is a serious skill proofing gun barrels. Try if for yourself and see how quickly if blows back and kills the firer. You would need the correct alloy, boring skills and simply getting it straight would be much tougher than you imagine...then you would need the right gauge of ammo not to blow the barrel apart, a strong breech etc etc....

Guns don't kill people, people kill people. As man advances he simply finds more ingenious and unpleasant ways of bumping off his fellow citizens. And remember most weapons makers work for governments, and as such sponsor them into office.

Gun crime has got worse since the Berlin Wall fell. Western Europe was flooded with thousands of brand new ex Soviet rifles and pistols for loose change. In 1990 you could buy an AK47 for ?30 in Berlin, still in the box.

A week government, ruled by PC, is letting gun crime expand. If we went back to the idea of shooting first and asking questions later then the gangsters might get the message. It brought the IRA to its knees, it should be re-started for the Yardies and their impersonators. Nig boys game, big boy rules.....
