Windows Firewall.

I've currently got mine set at medium. In fact it's always been at that level. Should I increase it to another level? If I did would it effect the performance of my lappy?

Using Windows firewall is like bareback fucking a crack addled hooker - you might be lucky and catch nothing but the reality is you're fucked.

I'll give it a try. Only problem is my Steganos AVP won't let me install anything from the links that Ash gave in the other thread.

I saw a good joke in a computer magazine once that sums up windoze firewall pretty accurately.
Picture a house - your computer, infront of the house is a path that leads down to a big, locked gate - windoze firewall. On either side of that gate there is no fence or wall.
