I would just like to clarify a point with you.

I've been referring to you as "Sir" for a while now. I do this because I respectfully regard you as a "Sir", as a leader (11658 posting to date), one of the prominent forumites and as such I believe the title of "Sir" suits you well.

If you object in any manner to my use of the word "Sir", I will without hesitation stop using it and issue you with a full apology.

why just call him Steve, I think it suits him better than a pretentious title

Again, no need to be holier than thou with a grovelling apology, just refrain from trying to be smug and just refer to him as Steve or Steve56

I have on a previous occasion asked Steve56 whether he objected to me calling/referring to him as "Sir" and he said it would be okay for me to continue to use it.

If that situation has changed I will of course refrain from calling Steve56 "Sir".

Your given name is honorific enough, Steve.

Hope you're well.

Thank you kindly. You have shown your generosity again. However, I feel that in the present climate and with regards to recent events I shall refrain from calling you "Sir" again.

If I have caused you any harm, annoyance or distress by my usage of the word "Sir" I offer my sincerest apologies.
