problem with a vista laptop, basically if ive been using laptop and i then put it into hibernate mode at say 9pm for example why does the laptop always wake itself up at 1 o clock in the morning,it dosent matter what time you put it to hibernate for exampe if i hibernated at 2 o clock in the morning it would stay hibernated for 23 hours until 1am the following morning or if i hibernated at 11pm at night it would wake itself up 2 hours later at 1am
ive looked in task scheduler and theres no tasks scheduled to start at that time
its a real pain somebody must know
i hope thanks

Check your setting's, it sounds like an automatic virus scan or disk defragment.

Try the check for updates... possibly enabled for that time.

Are you sure it's going into hibernate mode and not just butting the screen on standby?

Hibernate mode writes everything in memory to disk before shutting down. The OS and hard disks are shut down, with nothing in physical memory so I can't see how it's booting back up.

Standby mode is similar but everything's kept in physical memory which may be able to boot up upon scheduled tasks.

You can always tell if it's in full hibernation, or standby because you'll not hear the hard disks, or fans whirring.

Maybe you're getting mixed up with some battery saving mode (though I'm not 100% on this because maybe hibernate and standby modes are different in Vista from XP).

About scheduled tasks: Some programmes that have scheduled tasks, like virus/anti-spyware scanners don't show up in Windows scheduled tasks as they're not controlled by windows but their relative programmes.

For what it's worth, if you're going into hibernation at 9pm and it's restarting at 1am then why not just shut down the laptop completely?

A couple of other posibilities are you've got the wake time set up in the bios or windows, or a "wake on xxx" event thats being trigered in the advance settings on the power options.

re:sam

Hibernate is in theory a full shut down, except that you can wake the pc back to the exact state it was at before hibernation and standby just shuts some of the bits down but keeps running programs in memory at a low power state for a quicker wake up... personally standby is a waste of time.

I've got my laptop set up to hibernate when its not been touched for an hour as the fan on it is quite noisy and the led lights on the front way to bright so I can watch vids and if i fall asleep it shuts down shortly after widows media player stops playing but I can then wake it up and see where i was in a serise of vid files.

Basically the exact same thing I said! !laugh!

the only reason i stopped shutting down sam was because somewhere in vista it said if your using the laptop everyday your better putting it to sleep rather than shutting down for some reason but i went for hibernate instead of sleep coz sleep keeps blue light on front flasing
also have a hybrid sleep option but thats not enabled by default,i think thats more for vista desktops

last night i put it to sleep instead of hibernate and it didnt wake up so it was fine apart from flashing light but i reckon ill have to chuck a sock or something over led and go for sleep option
