connects to my wireless netgear router brilliantly so i bought a usb wifi dongle for my xp desktop which does work but its really unraliable/intermittant compared to laptop.
the usb dongle is a netgear wg111v3
router is netgear d834g
wifi card built into laptop is intel pro wireless
what do u reckon
or is it simply a case that the ?30 wifi dongle is no where near as good as the intergrated wifi card in ?900 quid laptop
cheers

It could be just about anything when it comes to Vista & wireless connections. Maybe the dongle doesn't work; maybe the drivers are crap; maybe cordless phones are interfering; maybe the access to the router/modem isn't set up correctly.....
It could be anything mate, but I'd start by investigating the above.

Wireles is generally crap.
With all the various pc's and laptops and routers I've tried on my set up, none can copy large files, or large groups of files, without disconection.
Gave up and tacked cable around the flat.
Bar use as a way of browsing the internet wireles is not very stable... I pitty any anyone that thinks its a good way to set up a small network in an office or home for anything other than routing to the internet.

sam my vista lappy connects to router fantastically its the xp desktop with the wifi dongle thats a bit intermittant however if i use a ethernet cable to connect desktop to router its fine so its something to do with this new netgear wifi dongle sometimes its ok othertimes its not
but the vista lappy with the intel wireless card is great
i thought the netgear usb-wifi adapter on desktop would connect to netgear router equally as good

apparently the netgear wifi usb adapter works on 2.4ghz-2.5ghz but the intel wofi card on laptop works on 2.4ghz-5.0ghz so whether thats anything to do with why the laptop is so much more stable/reliable i dont know

I dunno. I've backed up 4gig folders from XP to a macbook pro without any disconnections. It is faster via earthnet though.
