Each side plays the others three times, with a further five matches to follow a top-bottom split after 33. It makes mathematical, if not footballing, sense.
The thinking is that too many games with nothing really to play for will not attract crowds, so you have this artificial nonsense of a top league and a bottom one. For anyone who isn't Celtic or Rangers, it is economically very important to finish in the top six.
