ive given up looking at microsofts internet support for windows live messenger as its just incomprehensible and as usual am turning to the good folk of bgafd for my tech support. u know msn should be paying u guys for helping me out all the time!

anyway can anyone please tell me why sometimes when i try to add someone - or vise versa - we both show as offline to each other and cant communicate despite showing in each others contact lists.

Im not sure which version i have - i think 8.
I had this prob a while ago until i upgraded but there are no upgrades at the moment so that cant be the problem.

Id say i suffer this problem with at least half the people i try to add and even adding them manually via the 'add contact' key doesnt help.

this is not good when u rely on msn for ur webcam.

any ideas on how to rectify this will result in a free webcam show - if i can add u lol!!!!!!

You probably have a corrupt file and so will have to do a 'clean' installation - this is what updates effectively do. (make a back up of your contacts first, just in case)

1. Remove Windows Live Messenger from your computer.
a. In the notification area, right-click the Windows Live Messenger icon, and then click "Sign Out."
b. Click "Start," click "Run," type the following command, and then click "OK":
control appwiz.cpl
c. In the list of currently installed programs, select Windows Live Messenger, and then click "Remove."
d. If you are prompted to confirm that you want to remove the program, click "Yes."

2. Remove the temporary files and folders from your computer:
a. Click "Start," click "Run," type "cleanmgr", and then click "OK."
b. If you are prompted, click "C:" in the "Select the drive you want to clean up" list, and then click "OK.
c. On the "Disk Cleanup" tab, make sure that the following options are selected, and then make sure that no other options are selected:
- Downloaded Program Files
- Temporary Internet files
- Temporary files
- Temporary Offline files
- Offline files
d. Click "OK" two times.

3. Download Messenger manually:
- Windows Live Messenger
a. Start Microsoft Internet Explorer.
b. Visit
c. Sign in by using your beta account.
d. Click "Download" under "Windows Live Messenger."
e. In the "Security Warning" dialog box, click "Save," and then select the folder where you want to save the downloaded Setup package.

4. Install Windows Live Messenger:
a. Locate the Windows Live Messenger Setup file that you saved in step 3.
Use the following list of Setup package names to determine which package to use:
- Windows Live Messenger uses Install_Messenger_beta.exe
b. Double-click the Messenger Setup file for your operating system.
c. Follow the steps in the wizard to install Messenger.
