Hey people,
I'm making a full animated website on the ghost towns of the wild west in Flash and need some kind of soundtrack ....something classical preferably strings and q. slow obviously due to the nature of the site. Ideally something quite sad or lonely sounding if possible. I know a bit about classical music but can';t think of anything off the top of my head ....
any good suggestions anyone?
many thanks in advance my learned friends

Gorecki's Third Symphony is called Sorrowful Songs.
There are some mournful piano pieces by Chopin and Satie.
Saturn by Holst.

Thanks Caractacus for a quick reply.
Despite growing up in a constantly playing piano household my knowledge of Chopin is relatively current. It's pretty much the only music ive listened to through this term of uni and some of my favourite ever.
However I think the problem with Chopin is the very thing I ADORE about Chopin - the climactic parts of the songs would seem too central on a website....it needs to be a really good background sound ideally. But many thanks for the suggestion!!Chopin is definitely the best sad music ever in my opinion.
As for Gorecki and Satie - I'm not about to start researching, many thanks!

My suggestions may not be ideal, but they were all I could come up with at the time. Best of luck, ID.
And now I'm going to have to dig out some Chopin for myself.

Aaron Copeland was an American composer and he wrote a number of pieces of music with a wild west or American theme, maybe you can use one of those as that would fit in nicely.
Pieces he wrote include Billy the Kid, Lincoln Portrait, Old American songs, Appalachian Spring , Rodeo and so on.
You Tube, all using Copeland music (just examples):

Continuing my Copeland suggestion.
Here is one of his albums on Amazon and you can listen to some samples (scroll down).
I though number 2 Corral Nocturne was quite nice.
Better I thought was 11 Prarie Journal which was wistful rather than sad, and has a wild west "feel" about it.

Sorry..me and Copeland again.
After doing a bit more research I found he wrote a pice of music called Quiet City which would fit in nicely with the theme of your web site.
Description above says "The voice of the lone trumpeter, joined by that of the dark-toned cor anglais, rises and falls against the clear sound of the strings, in a cathartic release of the nostalgia, melancholy, regrets, and anxieties that distressed individuals in an urban society feel most acutely at night"
You can hear a clip here:

If you happen to be interested and have Flash player I'd like to show you how your suggestion has been used at some point after I've finished my project...if not, then no worries, thanks again.
