While trying to get to sleep the other night I tried to come up with the top 10 people who have made me laugh during my life.
I am 58 years old so my list goes back to the 1960s. The list covers everything an artist has done - radio, TV, films, records, live shows etc.
This is actually quite hard to do, think back over more than 40 years to who has made you laugh. I am sure I have forgotten someone.
1) John Cleese - I'm sorry I'll read that again (radio), 1948 show, Monty Python (TV and films), Fawlty Towers, Fish called wanda.
2) Ronnie Barker - Two Ronnies, Porridge, other TV work
3) Rowan Atkinson - Not the nine o clock news, Blackadder, live shows, parts of Thin Blue line, little bit of early Bean, films.
4) Peter Cook and Dudley Moore - Not Only But Also, live shows, Derek and Clive (some), Peter Cook's monologues, Dudley films including 10 and Arthur.
5) Rest of Pythons (Graham Chapman, Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Terry Jones) - Python TV shows and Films, Ripping Yarns, Rutland Weekend Television etc
6) Spike Milligan - Goons (radio), various TV shows, books,
7) Kenneth Williams - Round the Horne & Just a Minute (radio), Carry on films, TV work, books.
8) Peter Sellers - Goons (radio), various Films (Im all right jack, Dr Strangelove etc)
9) Marx Brothers - Their Films, plus books by Groucho.
10) Morecambe and Wise - TV shows, Eric on chat shows, parts of their films.
Special mention: Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy, Bob Hope, Woody Allen, Tommy Cooper, Tony Hancock, Steve Martin, Phil Silvers (Bilko), Marty Feldman, Graeme Garden, Mel Brooks, Rik Mayall & Ade Edmonson, Stephen Fry & Hugh Laurie, the cast of Airplane and Naked Gun films....
....and the only named female in my list, June Whitfield, who has been a stalwart of comedy since the 1950s on radio in Take it from here.
