According to some interpretations of the Old Testament, it's really just a guide for how the Hebrews should live and everyone else is considered less than human. Women are chattel, slavery is fine, homosexuality an abomination.

Most mainstream Jewish scholars have left all that nonsense where it belongs, in the bronze age, and allow the Torah to be interpreted for the times we live in. A number of imams do the same with the Koran, but they don't get the media attention that the mediaeval jihadists enjoy.

I'm an atheist. I don't believe the majority of what any of these holy books preach. But I certainly wouldn't treat them with disrespect---particularly if I'm in a country where that would cause riots.

Staff Sergeant Shithead Sniper is fine---he'll be back in the good old U S of A. It's some poor grunt a week or so from now who'll pay the price for that display of ignorant fuckwittery.

Oh dear....this makes me angry on two fronts.

Firstly, the soldier was an idiot. He must have known he'd cause offence, and went out of his way to specifically take the piss out of Muslims and their religion.

The atheist in me, though, can't help but notice the hypocrisy in the Musims' anger. This act could have, and may yet still, cause more bloodshed, but these same Muslims will will be cheering in the street the next time some 16 year old girl happens to have a crush on someone with the wrong faith, and they're caving her head in with rocks.....

I don't know whether to smash that Quran around the soldiers head, or tell those Muslims to shove it up their arse.

An idiot maybe. But he was using the book on a firing range on his base. So odds are he never really expected any one outside of the base to know.

I think with a story like this you really have to look at it objectivly. For instance if you were stationed out there doing the job he was doing,seeing the things he had seen and more than likely lost the friends he had probably lost. How much respect would you have for the koran and its followers? Chances are this was not even really about disrespect. More than likely just a childish way of releasing some frustration.

The biggest cunts in this whole thing are the media. I mean what possible good did they think would come from reporting this? Like all of these storys, If the Army had been left to deal with this "In house" no one would have ever been any wiser and some lives might have even been saved!!
