can you transfer cd,s that youve bought onto the i pod or can you only put content onto it from the i tunes website

thanks sam think ive got it,so instead of ripping a cd into windows media player then sync,ing or dragging to mp3 player the content has to be ripped/transfered into itunes then put from itunes into ipod
is that correct?

simply never had an ipod/mp3 player and wondered about the procedure of putting content onto the device,
