In Southampton (my home town) it seems to be an increasingly popular thing to drive around during the daytime with your headlights on. Is this just another stupid fad that is going on all around the country or is it a pure Soton thing. WHY????? !annoyed! It is ridiculous and in Southampton, bar this week, the weather has been really good. I awesome its the new chav thing now...............

not really, in some euro countries it's the law to drive with headlights all the time and it's something the government considered introducing here, maybe cos it's southhampton a lot of people have spent a lot of time abroad and have just picked up the habit

Its a road safety thing in many parts of the world. You dont need them on in good daylight but as a motorcyclist in my timem I can see the benefit for bikers. There are some real idiots using the road who dont notice double decker buses let alone a moped.

I'd rather have people driving with correctly dipped headlights on in bright sunshine than put up with the morons who drive in heavy rain or other types of poor visibility without any lights at all. If this new fad spreads it might mean more vehicles have their lights on when they should be on.
In aviation pilots talk of "see and be seen" - the roads are much more crowded and kill many times more people every year than the airways so "see and be seen" is not a bad thing for drivers to adopt.
In some US States it is the law to switch lights on as soon as you switch on your wipers.

It's coming to Britain soon whether we like it or not. EU law and all that. They are the masters now.

I've seen an increasing number of motorcyclists who don't just have lights on during the day, but full beam! They may think it lets you see them better, but it's just annoying as hell if one is behind you and their lights are in your mirrors. Chavs seem to like those driving lights that are also too bright for daytime.
The practice of headlights during the day is ok on long straight roads, like in deserts - or on windy mountain roads with lots of tunnels, but in built-up areas with lots of traffic it's just bloody annoying.

There may be an argument for not using them in built up areas and there is no argument for full beam or badly set lights, but at speeds over 35-40 mph, especially where there is a lot of spray about, headlights can increase the visibility of a vehicle by 50%.
Twenty years ago everyone moaned about the centre stop lights. Volvo were amongst the first to fit them as standard in the UK. They were seen as another way for Yuppies to show off.
I was converted when I was on the M25 and had to stop short due to a collision ahead at night. I stopped before the vehicle in front of me, as did the two vehicles either side. I and the truck on my left were hit from behind, the Volvo to my right and the faster moving traffic behind it all stopped. The driver behind me and the one behind the truck told the Police they hadn't seen the brake lights in time. The driver behind the Volvo said he couldn't have missed the third stop light.
Visibility is all, but badly set lamps annoy. The answer is simple but most of the motoring public rarely check their cars or adjust their driving to conditions.

With all this hoo-haa about carbon footprints and being green surely this contradicts that.
I'm confused even though I do see a reason for the lights on during the day now. It does make a noticeable difference on a clearly bright sunny day.
As for the EU making decisions that affect the rest of us..we aint heard the last of it. Just wait until the new reforms on the "television without frontiers" comes in.
The BBFC will be considered the welcoming committee..But thats another thread entirely.
