Steve,
I don't know which branch you use, but i think you must be unlucky.
I often use my local shop to buy bits for my computer and find the staff very helpful

I once bought an Electric Fly Killer from Maplins, the type with a blue light and electric shock. In the 3 years I had it it never killed one fly - they used to fly in, walk about and come back out. It did manage to kill a couple of moths, but on the whole was totally useless and didn't do what it was sold for. Also had a PC card adapter which worked ok, apart from the fact you couldn't get the card back out once it was inserted - great! Now I never think of going there.
