Just announced... Scolari will be the new Chelsea manager from 1st July 2008

Let's hope he talks Carvalho into staying

Chelsea Football Club is delighted to confirm that Luiz Felipe Scolari will be the club's new manager from July 1, 2008.

Felipe has great qualities. He is one of the world's top coaches with a record of success at country and club level, he gets the best out of a talented squad of players and his ambitions and expectations match ours. He was the outstanding choice.

Out of respect for his current role as Head Coach of the Portuguese national team, and to ensure minimum disruption to this work, there will be no further comment from Chelsea FC nor from Felipe about his new role until his employment with us commences.

Roman Abramovich wanted attractive attacking football and Scolari's teams have on the whole played attractive, attacking football.

My main concern is his lack of English. Unlike Capello who had a month or so to learn before his first game in charge (plus lengthy breaks in between games to continue learning), Scolari has no time in which to learn, and will need to get his ideas across day-in, day-out.

Had Chelsea already reached an agreement in principal with Scolari a month ago, which led to Bosigwa being bought?

This is fantastic news,and every Chelsea fan,old or new should be satisfied by Scolari's appointment.

Scolari will bring attacking football to Chelsea,something Abramovich has been craving for ever since he bought the club in 2003.

Scolari's first job will be to secure the services of our reliable rock in defence,Riki Carvalho,and the signs are that he will stay.

Possible signings include Quaresma,Robinho,Kaka and/or Ronaldinho.Deco is as good as a done deal as Frank Lampard is destined to be reunited with Mourinho at Inter.Deco would be a straight replacement for Lampard.

A good coach does their talking on the pitch.And Scolari WILL deliver and bring more success to Chelsea Football Club.

Scolari was 16/1 to be Chelsea gaffer last week.No one saw it coming.My money went on Sparky,but i started putting two and two together(regarding Scolari) on Saturday,and i was'nt proven wrong,so not really a big surprise to me that Scolari has got the job.

I am glad all you blues fans now have another father figure to love, and you are no longer a one parent family.
But to be honest, I can not see what was wrong with Avram Grant. He got you to the Champions league final which you would have won if JT hadn't slipped and second in the premiership.

Do you really believe big Phil will really make that much difference?

Of course as a Gooner I hope not, unless you are playing Man Utd.

Did Avram Grant really get us to within a whisker of winning the Champion's League and the Premiership (as you suggest), or was it, as I suspect, the sheer will and bloody-mindedness of some of the senior players (Terry, Lampard, Ballack) allied to Steve Clarke running the training sessions and giving the team talks?

I think you'll find it was probably the latter.

Did Grant ever look more lost than when stood on the sidelines in the pouring rain in Moscow as Steve Clarke and John Terry exhorted the players to one final effort just before extra time started? Nice guy though he may be, he was vastly under-qualified. That showed when, after some of his less logical substitutions, players would look to the bench quizzically, wondering where the hell they were meant to be playing.

Scolari will make a big difference. Those players who don't pull their weight will be jettisoned. No individual player is bigger than the team (remember Scolari taking Figo off against England at Euro 2004? He'd been largely ineffective, but was still the darling of the fans. Sven never did that with Beckham all the times he should have. It was that substitution of Figo that turned the game back in Portugal's favour) and with his track record and discipline, players will do as they are told. We might even see JT change for the better and stop arguing with refs all the time (he doesn't have many weaknesses, but that's one of them).

In reply to the original post in this thread, judging from his reported remarks today Carvalho will not any persuading from Scolari to stay at Chelsea.
