Age to buy alcohol

The Scorttish Parliament want to put it up to 21, to be able to buy alcohol in supermarkets/shops, the Belgians are following a similar line ---- they want to put the age up to 16 for beer/wine and 18 for spirits! At the moment anyone of any age can buy alcohol in Belgium.

Ridiculous in my opinion. British teenagers of 18 and 19 are much more sensible and adult than people at 21-24 in America. Treat em like kids and they'll act that way. Even at 28 I had to carry my British passport around with me just to have a glass of wine with my meal. I've seen a 40 year old refused alcohol because he had no ID. Total stupidity.
I'd bet that teenagers in Europe, where there's a lower age limit for purchasing alcohol, they're more adult-like than British teenagers of the same age.
Coincidence?

Like most things law & order these days, the problem lies in not punishing the minority properly for their actions.
If there were proper repercussions for people caught doing wrong, there wouldn't need to be sweeping laws that affect everyone.

Completely agree with you Peter.
Believe it or not when I said the same thing to certain Labour people during a discussion on the subject I was called Richard Littlejohn by a forum member.
Made me laugh my bollocks off (and call the poster an idiot) !laugh!
I actually agree with what they are trying to do and this could be the way forward, as far as I am aware they can still use pubs and that could be a good thing for the pub industry which is in decline, but can see the consequences already.
Trains of under 21's heading to the border towns etc. and instead of under 18's causing issues it could go up to under 21's.
I can also see Shami Chipolata rubbing her hands it's the human right of an under 21 to get shit-faced innit.
As usual though it's the loud minority ruining things for the majority.

Well, the 18-21's can die for their country, vote and pay their taxes, why shouldn't they be allowed a drink after a hard weeks work, like everyone else?

Those that behave responsibly should be able to. But those who get bladdered, fight in the street, shout, smash street furniture should get more than a night in the cells and a caution. proper punishment for the wrongdoers should lead to more freedom for the sensible majority.

I'm not talking about punishment, that's a different issue. I'm talking about the legal age to purchase and consume alcohol.
There are plenty of 40+ men who get pissed, throw furniture and smash windows.

and women too I guess ... I think they are pretty much the biggest increase in drunken yobbish criminal behaviour as opposed to the youth of today who always seem to be an easy target.

Selective censoring? What do you mean?
From what I gather, the clause: "I actually agree with what they are trying to do and this could be the way forward," tells me you're in agreement with Scotland raising the age limit. If you're not agreeing with that, then what?
Additionally, the sentence: "I can also see Shami Chipolata rubbing her hands it's the human right of an under 21 to get shit-faced innit." is an obvious pisstake at anyone complaining of these theoretical measures.
I'm a little tired, but I don't see anything in your post that made my reply misguided or irrelevant.
Oh, and the 'Shami Chipolata' comment has been done before; Jade Goody I believe. At least she admits to being a little thick and childish, so what's your excuse?
