More than 1,300 clergy, including 11 serving bishops, have written to the archbishops of Canterbury and York to say that they will defect from the Church of England if women are consecrated bishops.

Point 1..To not appoint women bishops would breach equal opportunity legislation

Point 2..Do they not think that their god is acting through the 'electorate' and that the decision is that of god..ie this is gods will and they are wrong

Point 3..Why does this PC government not speak out against these objectors and tell them to up their game..if a small business decided that only men could apply for the top jobs they would be hauled up before some tribunal

Point 4..this yet again shows us how pointless the Church of England really is and the arrogance of the zealots that run it.

The Church of England is probably THE most liberal, recognised Christian movement in the entire world; if they're discriminatory then what of the rest?

I'm afraid religions are discriminatory by nature; they have to be or they wouldn't work. The whole point of being a Christian is that it sets you apart from non-believers, Muslims, Jews &c, &c; and vice-versa.

Religion in the western world has been dumbed-down by science; it's had to make concessions about Biblical scripture to accommodate ever increasing knowledge, within societies, about life and the world around us. Where scripture was once literal, it's now mostly metaphorical. Religion has to keep moving the goalposts to stay alive; where it was once a massive, solid wall that dominated the landscapes of peoples' lives, it's now become a slippery eel, embarrassed and trying not to get caught so it can be poked at and scrutinised by philosophy and academia. And yet, it's an electric eel, and given the opportunity and circumstance, it will threaten anybody it feels is weak and gullible.

Any church denying gays and women opportunities within itself should be treated like any other public-sector service that is caught being discriminatory. I think society would accept coming down on the church in this way; even most believers aren't total sexists and homophobes; but, this would also open a big can of worms with Islam too; a religion that hasn't had the same dumbing-down by society, at least in and around Mesopotamia. But Islam cannot be changed by us; we can point out it's hatred and discrimination all we like, and I've done it, but Islam has to reform from within, and so we need Muslims on our side by setting a good example.

Once again it seems acceptable to bash Christians for their beliefs.....soft,safe easy target....don't see anyone bashing Islam,for their views on Gay sexuality or womens rights...Noooo way to scarey!!!!!!

You're having a laugh aren't you?

Islam is a peaceful religion, so they tell us - only some branches of it like to cut your head off, swing you by the neck from a crane, stone you to death or blow you up! Not to mention Honour Killings and female slavery and marrying girls of 9. Apart from these things, it's a great religion and holds something for everyone - including wacky clothes, silly beards, hooks for hands, eye-paqtches and other fun stuff like facing east when having a crap. I love Islam, me like!
