Speakers don't work

After my comp got infected with some malicious software,I had to do a complete system recovery...but now my speakers won't work...I downloaded realtek AC97 from download.com,but it hasn't worked any ideas anyone?? any help would be appriecated..many thanks..

same happened to me a few months back.
i have a dell computer and i had to download sigmatel audio and use it as my default audio playback device.

Have you got a soundcard or are you using the on-board one?

I have no idea Mega...when I got this comp,I just plugged the speakers in and they worked..my comp is a hewlet packard,and my speakers are harman/kardon....I didn't need to do anything when I put it together,so I thought the software was part of the set-up..thanks for you help Mega and smc...

Thanks for help everyone...decided to go and get a new comp..way less hassle....I can't get the mentalaty of someone who invents this malicious software....
