Best download managers

Just wondered what the current best (free) ones are and whether they're really any use for a broadband user?
Cheers for any insights.

The only one I have used and that was some time ago is Download Express.
It worked well provided the source allowed a download manager to be used.
Generally limited use on Broadband but potentially useful if the download speed is slow and unreliable for some reason.

Are we talking actual 'download managers' or are we really talking about site rippers?

The only rippers I know anything about are those of the bodice kind.

Well in that case I cant help. Sorry...
However, if you don't understand what a site ripper is, as you indicated, I'll explain, because you may find that it would be better for your needs than a download manager...
To me, a download manager is when you go to a site and select 13 or 14 .wmv downloads, (for example) and then it 'looks after' the download process...
Result: When program finishes, you have a folder with the specif .wmvs in, which you chose manually to download...
A site ripper, is a program that you just tell it the name of the site (The URL) and tell it what you TYPE of files you want... IE .WMVs and .jpgs
The site ripper then goes to the site, and FINDS AND DOWNLOADS ALL of that type of file that it finds on the site... (This is all automated)
Result: When program finishes, you have a folder with the ALL OF THE .wmvs in, and ALL OF THE .jpgs which were on the site...
In other words, you've got ALL of the vids, and ALL of the pics in one go... Not just the few that you chose to manually download...

Just had a thought... Perhaps your talking about using it for rapidshare style downloads? If so, ignore post above !

You don't need a site-ripper, *nix, curl and wget, a shell script with a soup?on of perl and Robert's your mothers brother.
