MMC vs SD vs SDHC

Hi, I just got myself a Digital Camera (Samsung S760), & I'm tying to figure out the differences with the Memory Cards. The Manual states it can use either an MMC card (1Gb Max Guaranted), SD card (2Gb Max Guaranted) or an SDHC card (4Gb Max Guaranted). It also recommends not going above the max values stated, as well as recommended only using "SanDisk Memory Cards".

Looking on some websites about purchasing 1 of the SD or SDHC cards, it refers to:

SD Card
SDHC Card
SD Card (45x)
SD Card Elite Pro 50x
SD Card Extreme III
SD Card High Capacity
SD Card High Capacity, Class 4
SD Card High Speed 80x
SD Card High Speed 133x
SD Card Ultra II Plus

My question is, what are they all meaing, & what is the difference between them?

I haven't been able to figure out if just a standard SD/SDHC card is recognizable by the Camera, or are the other versions also acceptable as well. I don't really want to go buying a Card for the Camera, to only find out that the specific version I buy cannot be recognised by the Camera.

Simple answer -

SD is one standard, all the different types are to do with the speed that they will accept data from the camera. I'd say that an Ultra II will be fast enough for your needs as it's not a top-end camera, a faster card will give no benefit.

SDHC and MMC are different standards.

MMC is a older format superseded by SD.

For stills the card speed is not significant as I doubt if the camera can write faster than the standard speed for SD.
The faster cards are required from video cameras that record direct to memory card rather than tape, DVD or hard drive.

While one big card is convenient I would buy more than 1 smaller card, although 1GB seems to smallest standard card now.
Then if the card fails
a) you have another
b) you loose less if a card fails - yes it does happen - a work colleagues Olympus 1GB xD card failed catastrophically when he tried to download to his PC and he lost about 200 photos. Recovery software found nothing and the card would not reformat.

SanDisk is a well known respected brand but any SD card should work as they should all meet the same specification.

Thanks guys, I've just bought a couple of standard 2Gb SD Cards, soon as I can I'll also get an SD Ultra II when I've got a few extra quid spare.
