Coffin of British Soldier on A34
Travelling South the other day I saw a Police Car with blue lights driving slowly along the A34.It was leading a hearse in which there was a coffin draped by the Union Flag.Behind the hearse was another police car. This really brought it home to me more than any news report. This was the body of one of our boys going to his resting place. What an utterly pointless waste of life.Iraq is about oil and Afhghanistan about ..well who the hell knows??

Iraq is an unjust US-created war about oil.
But Afghanistan is about liberty and justice. Because if you get a fundamentalist Islamic state of that nature, it will spread and spread. We are right to be there and it is nothing like Iraq.

Cant but agree with you. If a quarter of the money poured down the hole that is the Iraq disaster had been spent on constructing a better society for the people of Afghanistan as an alternative to the Taliban, there'd be a lot less sights like that one on the A34.

Our boys (and girls) are out there doing a thankless task and regularly.drip ..drip.. all over the country scenes like this are being repeated.I despise this pathetic government for worthlessly putting familes and friends through this pain.

There's a difference between being there for the right reason and the careless way the campaign is run. I remain, despite the errors, in favour of intervention in Afghanistan and vehemently against the distraction and worse, that is Iraq.

Though not to be done lightly there are often occasions when armed intervention in the affairs of a state can be justified.
For instance, the invasion of Cambodia by Vietnam put an end to the murderous Pol Pot regime, for which instead of recieving the thanks of the rest of the world they were further punished by the US. When a country has been hijacked, as was Afghanistan, by the Taliban, who reduced it to the status of theocratic basket-case, the rest of the world has I feel a duty to impose itself to prevent that country from destabilising the region and prevent it being used as a haven for attacks on others as well of course as a means of protecting the population from their 'leaders'. Action in Haiti is a good example of the latter, as are our own interventions in West Africa. The outside world imposing some order on Sudan wouldn't be amiss. For too long the world has stood by whilst countries have been reduced to utter hell by their governments. There needs to be a wide agreement on intervention and it mustn't be an excuse to take over that country's natural resources, but there will always be a justifcation in the right circumstances for interference.

IMHO we should let them get on with it and not try to change the world. The twats in Africa deserve Mugabe for instance. It's a shitty world in many places and we should stop thinking that Victoria is on the throne and Palmerston is PM.
