Wireless & Outlook Express

I am a numpty with all things computer.

Does anyone know why Outlook Express can receive email on a wireless connection but won't send them and more importantly how to solve it please?

I am using a laptop with windows X P.

If there was a problem I would assume I wouldn't be able to get online and wouldn't be able to receive any emails.

You just need to go into outlook, choose options, then connections set the connection to use any available, or lan, or it will attempt to always dial out.

You normally have a different setting for your incoming mail to your outgoing mail.

Your incoming mail cmoes via "pop3" (normally) and your outgoing mail goes out via "SMTP".

Your ISP will have given you to different "addresses" for these and you need to make sure you have them set up correctly in Outlook.

I am with Virgin and for pop3 they gave me "pop3.blueyonder.co.uk" and for smtp they gave me "smtp.blueyonder.co.uk" (yours of course will be different but you get the idea).

Go into Outlook "accounts" then "mail" and make sure yours are correct.

These should be the same whether you are on wired or wireless, that should make no difference.

Hi Guilbert

Both are correct.

I've been on the net looking and some have suggested it may be down to anti-virus software.

The solution being to switch it off.

I've no idea how to do that (AVG). I am assuming its the same for them all. Do you have any ideas please?

That's the first thing I checked both are correct (re Guilbert's post) but it's still not sending.

I doubt it is to do with your Anti Virus (not sure how your AV could stop Outlook sending an email)

If you are running a Firewall it may be that.

It may be your firewall has somehow blocked Outlook from contacting the internet.

If you are running one try to turn off your firewall, usually you do this by finding the icon in the bottom right on the task bar, RIGHT clicking on it, then selecting Shutdown or Close or similar.

You can shut down your anti virus in the same way.

Note if you reboot your computer then your firewall and anti virus will automatially restart.

Gotta be your settings RA, why not delete the mail account and start again, go to your sevice providers website, and download the settings for outlook express, as Guibert say's it doesn't matter how you connect, apart from dial up...wireless or lan settings are both the same..good luck.

I'd be searching under..

XP laptop outlook express(Version?),router(make,model number?)
unable email send

Theres plenty of reported cases out there of blocked ports by ISPs
namely number(port 25) and also cases of ports being blocked at the router
level

Search with the above and you'll most likely find someone with your same set-up complete with solution

It was deleted etc talk talk suggested it but when set up again the same thing still happened.

I am going to try Deuce's suggestion
