Harriet Harman, the minister for shite

Absolutely hilarious - she wants them to scan the newspapers for phrases like 'new girls every week', 'oriental beauties', 'exotic looks' and other telltale phrases - because as everyone knows these are thinly disguised euphemisms for 'we've got loads of trafficked girls chained in the basement, for you to shag'.
What a stupid old cow

I know you have a problem with Harman Johnny but this helps achieve what she wants. Hardly stupid, especially when it keeps her and her views in the public eye.
The trouble with the papers is that most pretend to be concerned, in that they can't wait to print a story on the subject on the front pages but will often then have ads for it a few pages later.
Actually profiteering from something they are supposedly against.
Like it or not some of the ads do have a link to trafficking and it will mean success for her if they are reported, and those reports are actually acted on.
Keep in mind if it churns out brothels and not a single trafficked person Harman won't give a toss.
The trouble is it looks like another reason for it to stay hidden.
Yet another case of the industry not looking after itself, giving Harman her ammo and the 'authorities' deciding it will do it.

Anyone with half a brain knows that prostitution has been around since antiquity, and that no amount of legislation or oppression against it will ever eliminate it.
The problem with UK politicians of all shades though (Labour, Tories and all the rest - it doesn't matter) is that they're shit-scared of legalising it (and thus taking much of the criminality out of it and making it safer for working girls and punters alike) because they think that would mean that they would be "seen to be condoning" it - and so all that ever happens is half-baked so-called "initiatives" like this and continued persecution of those involved on both sides of the transaction.
The result? Prostitution gets driven further underground, and it wouldn't even suprise me if, as a result of this latest NuLabour / Harriet HarmMan nonsense, we don't actually end up with MORE trafficking of illegals in the UK, not less.

Talk about lost the plot ! Don't you just picture hundreds of Mary Whitehouse lookalikes wandering round in gangs hitting pimps with their handbags ?

The Birmingham local press had a big campaign against prostitution a few years ago- screaming editorials, the lot..... And pages of Personal Services ads at the back- which continue to this day.
I'd rather have Sullivan than this lot!

Another thing that's striking about this is that HarmMan doesn't appear to care a toss about *male* prostitutes or people who are trafficked illegally for what essentially amounts to slave labour of the non-sexual variety.
Because if she did, surely she'd have something to say about that as well?
But no - this is all about HarmMan's "wimmin's crusade" and is symptomatic her own personal, warped all-men-are-rapists / all-women-are-oppressed / its-only-women-who-get-a-raw-deal view of the world.

I'd disagree with the 'all-men-are-rapists' view but agree with the others.
Harman has a view that women can't work in the industry with a free mind and that is why I always disagree with her.
As I said the unfortunate thing is that the industry does little if anything to stop giving Harmon the ammo she wants to fire.
Dave is wrong about legalization. The main reason against is that it doesn't help deal with the problems in communities. You will always get the numpties pestering women in the area just for being women in the area, as was the case with a 15 year old girl who lives near me.
She got abuse for refusing to have sex with a certain dickhead and that is something that there are plenty of examples of.
Plus you will also always get the workers causing the problems they do.
The only real option, which in itself also causes problems, are tolerance zones but that would need to be managed, it is something the industry isn't prepared to accept and to be honest in its current state couldn't even do.
