Shannon Matthews: what future will she have?

I feel very sorry for this 8 year old girl. Her mother, although nasty and clearly deserving of what 's coming her way, is about to spend a huge amount of time in jail, and the girl has to face so many people refering to her mother as 'evil'. This is not only the Police, who called her mother this today, but no doubt the tabloid's tomorrow (look out for the front page of The Sun tomorrow - I'm sure 'evil' will feature in its inevitably huge headline about this). The girl is from a very chavvy family, with a gormless mother with bad morals who has never worked, the girl also has a "stepdad" about 12 years older than her and who is about 13 years younger than her mother - and he has been arrested for alegedly downloading kiddie porn.

The girl will no doubt spend the next 8 years in care, and many kids have a bad time in care. She will probably leave at the first opportunity (aged 16) and then live a life of temporary residencies with partners who aren't very good to her, petty crime and drugs. She may even become a prostitute. I very very much hope I am wrong on all these points but people who have had, and will have, the sort of childhood from birth to aged 16 that this girl has had/will have, often turn out like that. I feel very sorry for this girl. What do other people think and what sort of future do you think she is likely to have?

On this one I hope the press leave the kid alone and we don't get "Shannon Matthews - One Year On" etc stories in years to come...

As you rightly point our children taken into care don't have a great record. On the other hand leaving children with unsuitable parents is clearly not a great plan either. Fuktifino what the answer is.

Seriously, everybody is loving this story. The wanker's in the media are in a win-win situation, they are manipulating the morons involved in the case ("ver communi'y") like the idiots they are for 'good television' whilst simultaneously enjoying looking down their supercilious noses at the fools, whilst all the other Jeremy Kylers in the country can have their latest 'figures of hate' to make themselves feel good about themselves. And why do the morons in the police feel obliged to stand outside the court giving the press ridiculous soundbites? ("Pure Evil" - have these people really lived such sheltered lives? Is Karen Matthews on a par with Fred & Rose West? Myra Hindley? Uday Hussain? Adolf Hitler? Jacqui Smith?)

There's something seriously wrong with society and I'm not sure things will ever get better
