Well, we made it out of Black Wednesday I suppose. Even by 1994 things seemed ok again - can anyone really see a solution to the current situation short of a collosal bailout or najor sociological change?
Economies naturally ebb & flow, as do share values, currency values and so on so we will periodically endure recessions but the castles made of sand seem to be seriously fucked this time around

John Major is the chap we should all blame for the state of the uk now/today....Labour was always going to win the the 97 election, but with Major being a complete wimp/failure gave Labour the landslide that will take/taken elections after elections to reverse.......
Good government is a product of strong opposition !
Tories never had any opposition in the 80's..... and Labour have never had it......so we have had the bad, overspending, wasteful government of the last 11 years!!

Isn't it true that he once failed to get a job as a bus conductor because he couldn't add up small change?
No wonder he was a crap chancellor.

It was Major's fault that we entered the ERM - the thing we were ejected from on Black Wendesday in September 1992. That day the Government lost the same money as it would have cost to build 45 district hospitals (?15 billion). No one apologised, no one cared, no one resigned.
When Major was Chancellor he pushed Thatcher, his boss, on this. Nigel Lawson had already resigned as Chancellor that year and Major had replaced him. Thatcher thought it would be bad for the country but was afraid of falling out with Major over this. She couldn't lose 2 Chancellors in one year, that would have been the end of her. So into the ERM we went. Saving her own political skin was seen by her as more important than what was in the country's best interests. So Thatcher's career and Major's ego were what gave us membership of the ERM, and it was a disaster!
On the wider issue of Major's complaints about Brown in the last few days, Major was the man who said on the eve of the 1992 General Election: "re-elect us on Thursday and recovery begins on Friday" - not only was there no recovery from the long recession but the economy collapsed that autumn with the ERM crisis, which meant massive hikes in Interest Rates which caused huge numbers of people to lose their homes and huge numbers of businesses to go bust. The base Interest Rate changed twice in ONE DAY as a result of the ERM problems!
Major also said on the eve of that election "vote Tory on Thursday and taxes go down, vote Labour on Thursday and taxes go up." So the nation re-elects Major. At the very first budget him and Norman Lamont introduce VAT on fuel, which screwed millions of pensioners, with a huge hike in their fuel bills, and Major also introduced 22 new tax rises during that political term (1992-97).
The lies that John Major told to get re-elected in 1992 makes him someone that can barely even be regarded as a nice person, let alone someone who thinks he can criticise later Prime Ministers or Chancellors! This serial liar and deceiver should just disappear, and stop bothering us!!
