Vocal Pitch of Today's Young Women

Is it my imagination or do today's young ladies have voices like quacky ducks?

I was watching some footage of life in the 1940's and one thing I noticed was that the girls around their late teens/early twenties had softer, fuller voices than what I hear today. Girls now seem to talk with almost Asian twangs.

Today's diction is poor, And cultural influences like the Aussie 'rising end to a sentence' making it sound like a question.
I could be wrong, but I think a poor command of our Mother tongue hasn't helped.
When you do hear a young lady with a nice well modulated voice these days it does draw your attention.

Of course in my day, at least before the voice of Karen Mathews ruled in the uk, all women sounded like this! !happy!

You make a good point Jim - I think I'm of a similar vintage to you - went to school in the 60's/70's when proper diction & elocution was still being taught. Sadly that's all gone now.

Yes exactly - I was prompted to post this subject because just a few days ago I was delighted to be walking near some very sexy girls in their early twenties (no I wasn't following them deliberately!) and I could hear them talking about boys, other girls, fashion - the usual girlie stuff.

For that period of minutes I dont think I once heard swearing nor endless punctuation with "like" throughout their sentences. They had soft, feminine voices which seemed particularly out of place because a huge drinking hole style pub was nearby which teems with bitchy slags who always seem angry at everyone within a mile of them.

But the voice pitch thing - I cant help feeling it has been adopted from popular culture, possibly American movies where the women talk like they've been breathing helium.

We had that problem over here as well but that was in the 1990s. These days you have to careful because some young women in their early 20s look like teens though.
