SSLs Are they important

I would like some opinions from Forumites as to the importace of SSL certificates.

They perform a secure communications between the user and the server that's implementing it. So its there as a method to stop people hijacking/snooping the data between the two.
A lot of people will want to see it before they make financial transactions as they believe there data is secure, but it is absolutely no indication that your it iss secure once its reached the server, only during transmit.
It totally depends on what you are trying to achieve as to if it makes sense or not.
