"Decompressor" ??

Dear Members,

On the 13th August, Marky pointed us to the site below:-
(with the nice young lady from the UK)
http://www.moviehaven.org/mp251.html

Various large files are available for free downloads, but having downloaded the first, nothing would play. I received a message on the computer about "decompressor" being missing and also I was not quite sure which programme this kind of file is supposed to be view in. I guessed it was "Media Player" I was unable to view the file (part of a video I guess) at all.

Can anyone help with some computer settings/installation advice on this please?

I have Windows 98SE with AMD K7 700Mhz CPU, Office Premium 2000 (includes Word 2000), Adbobe Photoshop 7 (only 1 day old so I don't know much about it, possibly it's only for still photos?), Irfanview, etc.

Thank you.

Regards,

Vic.

Go to

http://www.divx.com/divx/

and download the most elementary version of DivX. It worked for me.

Do not download the "Gain" one you end up with Gator on your pc puking up adverts on a regular basis.

Dear M-a Dutchman, Bob Sp and Woodgnome,

Thank you very much.

I see there is a "Pro Version" of the programme M-a D recommended said to provide better quality (for $30 and without the ads Bob warns against).

Going for the better programme as I am less keen on downloaded purchases,I was just wondering as it is possibly a "once only download", if there is an equivalent programme available over here (CD, boxed with manual) that one could buy at PC World or similar?

Woodgnome, are you the "moderator" perhaps? - sorry for not putting "Off Topic"!

Many thanks again.
Regards,

Vic. Friday 16/8/02 11.03am.

So I am unclear-do you have Media Player or not? It sticks itself in your desktop & tray but is otherwise well-behaved, & as Microsoft stuff goes, works well. Watch out for divx global, it has spyware.....25 years ago today? I was getting in my car leaving a porno theater in Tampa when I heard the news about Elvis..

This type of AVI file does not work with versions of Microsoft Media Player earlier than version 7. I don't know if it works with version 7, and I don't want to know.
If you want to use version 7, you have to agree with the following:

'You agree that in order to protect the integrity of content and software protected by digital rights management ("Secure Content"), Microsoft may provide security related updates to the OS Components that will be automatically downloaded onto your computer. These security related updates may disable your ability to copy and/or play Secure Content and use other software on your computer. If we provide such a security update, we will use reasonable efforts to post notices on a web site explaining the update.'

There is at least one person who does not want Microsoft to put any stuff on his computer without his explicit consent. Guess who.

I think the freeware version of DIVX (without the ads of course) is safe. Ad-aware, the anti-spywware program I use, had nothing against it.

Twenty-five years ago I woke up, at the usual moment, in the usual place (my own bed), put on the radio, like I always did, and heard Elvis had died.

Dear Woodgnome,Mike and M-a D,

Thank you for the "welcome" message!

Mike, I believe I do have "Media Player" I think it comes with "Windows 98SE" - I'm not sure which version. I will investigate. Thanks for the information M-a D.

I presume if I buy the Pro Version of the other programme, will this do all that Media Player does or is this in addition to M.P.? - I am not quite sure.

I also wanted to get "Screen Shot De Luxe 4" and that costs $29.99 with some $40 postage (from Broderbund in Germany) and there seems to be no other supplier of it over here that I can trace so far.

Shortly off to town for a few copies of Silvia's Mayfair plus DVDs! Too embarrased to buy it locally! I wonder if Silvia has seen it yet! I wonder if the stars ever get copies of books and movies that they're in - Misty McCain's husband (who I think was in the hairdresser's chair in one of the films with Buttman?) was out once I hear looking for movie tapes of Misty!

Regards,

Vic.

PS. On the sad night 25 years ago, like with President Kennedy's assasination, you don't forget where you were and what you were doing! My mother and I were travelling back from the west-end and we heard all these Elvis songs on the car radio.

When we got back home, "News at Ten" with Reginald Bosanquet came on, he announced Elvis was dead, - then just before the end of the programme, he said:- no, he was still alive and receiving hospital treatment!

I disabled the MSN Auto-Update feature; doesn't that take care of it? Would seem to me. There is BTW a site that lets you download previous versions of programs like this, or Winamp, or whatever. I visited it once & was amazed at how detailed & complete it was...
