Classic gangster film 'Get Carter' on C5 yesterday

Post by max_tranmere »

I watched this for about the 10th time last night. Michael Caine plays one mean bastard in this film, and his acting is superb. He has such a menacing look all the time that you would have been scared just meeting this character, let alone crossing him. What do other people think about this movie? To me it's a toss-up between this, and The Long Good Friday, for the title of the best British gangster film of all time.

The first half of Donald Cammell/Nic Roeg's 'Performance' is up there, 'Sexy Beast' deserving of a mention, and an older film starring Stanley Baker called 'Robbery' is a good one.

I was watching some dvd extras featuring Malcolm Macdowall at the weekend and he rates 'Gangster No 1'. Macdowall's playing of Benny Barrett in 'Our Friends From The North' was a joy to behold and in gangster territory.

Get Carter has that continuous air of menace about it whereas LGF can get a bit pantomime in places. First saw it as an errant 16 year old, Still got the Roy Budd 45 somewhere. !happy!

I saw the Stallone remake and, like many American attempts at 'doing Britishness' they missed the mark completely. Stallone apparently personally campaigned for the multi-storey car park used in 'Get Carter', which is located just outside Newcastle in Gateshead, to be preserved as a bit of film history. I think many of the locals want it knocked down as it is such an eye-sore (it may even have been knocked down by now).

One of my favourite all time films.

Did you spot the guy with six fingers in the first pub scene?

This, for those interested in this sort of thong.

Fabulous music from Get Carter and other Roy Budd scored movies is available on a CD called 'Vigilante', available here and there if you look around.
