I wonder, do any of these hotshot briefs ever sit down in the
wee hours, and look back on their youthful idealism, thinking
"where did I lose that fire"?
Can any one of them, hand on [possibly optional] heart, really
argue that an appeal is a valid use of their time? In what way
has justice been disserved by the sentence [except perhaps by
being too short]?

No, I think for many MPs and lawyers [but not for estate-agents,
true] there is an initial intention to make the world a better place.
Only later do they become money-grubbing, cynical shysters.
