Don't be so tight, splash out ?50 to ?70 on Photoshop Elements !laugh!
And it'll most probably do far more (and better) than any free software will.

Just don't want to buy anything yet as i'm going wireless next week with a Toshiba Satelite laptop and don't know if there's any good photo stuff already on it - I'll keep in mind your recommendation for future ref' , regards

You could try Photoshop's online service (although it's nothing like the full version, and rather underwhelming), but if it's actual full software you're after you might want to try either of these:
I haven't used these myself, but have heard good things about them - the latter in particular.
