Twitter - what an appropriate name...

Has anyone signed up and joined Twitter? It seems to be taking over from Facebook, just like how that took over from MySpace, and how that (kind of) took over from Friends Reunited. I must say though that Twitter seems like a step backwards, it is very primative - rather like Friends Reunited was when it began. All Twitter seems to be is somewhere where you can post comments, on a very basic typefaced screen, and there is no option for posting photos or anything else. Has anyone else joined this strangely named 'social network facility', and what do you think of it?

"The internet is the grandest illusion ever created. It makes people think they're really informed, they're really popular, they have lots of friends, they're part of a community. And they actually have a voice. They don't actually realise that like all of us, they're completely fucked and powerless."

Nicky Wire, Q Magazine, May '09.

Use Twitpic to post pics and use an app like TweetDeck or Seesmic Desktop to get the full use out of Twitter.

I like Twitter. I don't post anything really but I use it to get updates on my footy team, upcoming gadgets and programmes, and most recently news from the streets of Tehran.

You can get news and gossip directly from the source rather than via other media. For instance, Steven Fry did a recent review of the new iPhone 3GS in the Guardian to which an editor miss quoted him. Within an hour Mr Fry twittered to all his followers that he was miss quoted. It's only a small thing regarding a phone review but the implications of bypassing filtered media is there to ponder.

Will we have to wait for interviews of our favourite sports stars/bands in the future when we can get it directly from the horses mouth via them texting the latest from their mobile phone? Can we gather more accurate, up-to-date information from lots of different people on the ground in Iran rather than wait for the next news bulletin where an editor/panel decides what we hear and see?
