Were the characters Seaman Staines and Master Bates real or figments of a drug haddled youth?

Not in the original but I'm sure somewhere someone has dubbed the alternative cast, including on top of the two you mention, Roger the Cabin Boy and One-eyed Willy.

Along with Roger the Cabin Boy and One-eyed Willy, they are nothing but urban myth.
