I cant remember when fivers were last available at ATM's, it must have been 10 or 15 years ago, but they are coming back now because of the recession! Everything that happens is 'because of the recession' if you watch the TV news channels. So Britain is about to re-start its love affair with the ?5.00 note again...

I think you have been using the wrong cash machines. There always have been some ATMs with ?5 notes.

I remember seeing something on a programme, possibly C4 news, about the demise of the fiver, they haven't printed any for a long time, and I recall they siad they were no longer given out by ATM's as having something to do with it.

You must live in the posh part of UK. ATM's around here have always dished out fivers.

I haven't encountered a fiver-issuing one in, what? The last five
years? The OSD's menu usually has a tenenr as its lowest unit.
There may be some dispensers on the walls of banks that do fivers,
but again not to my knowledge.
IIRC the subsidiary reason for their withdrawal from ATMs was
that their effective devaluation meant that the notes were too
worn to be used in the machines [i.e. they clogged up the works]
and it was uneconomical to print fresh notes.
Much like the demise of the decimal halfpenny....... which few of
us miss : -)

Fair enough; I'm in Lunnun, where a fiver will get you three-quarters
of a cup of tea.

I wonder how long it will be until the fiver disappears for good. I would say within 5 years it will go and we will have a coin. By then the 1p and 2p will have gone and the 5p will be the smallest denomination.
