I'm contacting you from Docklands magazine, a lifestyle publication in...you guessed it..London's Docklands.

We're running an x-rated feature about all things erotic etc in the Docklands, Canary Wharf, Wapping, Bermondsey,Isle of Dogs, Greenwich areas and I'm hoping for a bit of help.

the block you refer to is called 'cascades' and was designed by renowned architect piers gough. the eccentric design is supposed to represent a melted candle, as well as containing numerous nautical references (porthole windows, etc). this was inspired by a play on the word 'chandler' (a chandler being a candlemaker, as well as a the name of someone who sells nautical equipment, iirc). the dual reference is intended as an allusion to the building being sited on the banks of the thames, in the heart of the old docks. wot a wag! it was the first high rise apartment block to emerge out of the enormous redevelopment of london docklands in the late eighties and was meant to usher in a new era of urban sophistication (we locals being nowt but troglodytic bumpkins, of course). unfortunately, (or fortunately) nigel lawson sent the economy down the tubes with his adherence to the viv nicholson school of unsound financial management and those people who had so hastily bought into the yuppie brochure lifestyle, defaulted on their mortgages faster than gary glitter can break into a chorus of "do ya wanna touch". in their place came legions of working girls, eager to offer their services to the thousands of builders who slogged away all day on the proud erections of canary wharf, only to spend their evenings shacked up in shoddy, overcrowded accommodation, hundreds of miles from their families, for weeks at a time. when the less than urbane reality of the new docklands was brought to the attention of the local media, it caused considerable outrage, although locals found it pretty amusing.

and yes, mudchute is still there - and still sexy!

I was a squatter in Rotherhithe Street for 4 years in the 80's and had a great time. Everybody on the Estate--Amos--knew everybody else, Australians, New Zealanders, South Africans, Irish, punks, artists, writers, musicians, piss heads, junkies, dykes and one very brave black guy called Basil, the natives not being known for their beliefs in racial harmony.
For a young stud as i then was it was a wonderful place to live, loads of parties, new Antipodean lasses arriving to replace the one's going home, a veritable cornucopia. The only filmmaker i came across was Derek Jarman, who did'nt take too kindly to me telling him that Orson Welles did'nt need 20 takes to do a one minute scene.
The one thing that united us and the locals was a profound hatred of the London Docklands Development Corporation, who eventually had their evil way and booted us all out. Sir Bob Backhander Mellish was universally despised, even today what ought to be the safest Labour seat in the country is still held by Lib Dem Simon Hughes.
Anyway, enough of this nostalgia. Your ''Lifestyle'' magazine sounds like the sort of bollocks we'd have used as bog paper in those days, but if you if you offer me enough dosh i'll write an article for your rag on the golden days of squatting in Docklands.

Yeh, I think you are 10 years too late. Then a good lot of mag stuff was produced there and at least 4 page 3/mag girls lived there, (not all stupid) got in cheap and sold v dear.
Also one of the adult agents was there and of course Television X is still there
