Its been a year or so since I last went to Shields but used to go there a lot at one time. Many a decent curry house can be found on Ocean Road. Never heard of that pub though. Perhaps its a local nickname for a pub with a totally different name.

e.g. The Shipwrights is known as Swannys for some reason and has been for decades.

O/T Attn JJ re changes.

Is The Marsden Inn a different pub to The Marsden Grotto?

The latter being the one with the lift down the cliff face from the carpark and the pub set into a cave at the base of the cliff. Had some bother with flooding and was derelict last I heard. Dont know wether it made news round your way but the landmark Marsden Rock collapsed into the sea a couple of years ago and the remainder was blown up for safety reasons (that was there when my great grandparents were kids). Many a homeless kittiwake and cormorant resulted. The kittiwakes then took up home on the Baltic Flour Warehouse before it got turned into a poncey art gallery and the birds were once again evicted incase thier poo offended the southern media types flocking up on the 1330 from Kings X to marvel at the "art". Call me a philistine but I prefered the way it was before all this "progress". Theres hardly any skyline since all the cranes came down. No landmarks anymore such as the huge flame from Monkton Cokeworks or the pit wheels/D-towers of Wearmouth, Westoe and Vane Tempest. Ah...Nostalgia. Its all call centres and retail parks now. Still thats progress as Thatcher would say.

I missed Marsden Rock disappearing? God, I must ahve been pissed.
The Inn is a huge place back behind Gipsy's Green (where the marathon ends): that little hole downstairs was a terrible place in my time, dead grotty (sorry for pun).
Progress? Stuff it.
