Anyone like this composer i listened to a pioece last night reminded me of Rachmaninov.

The music of Robert Schumann can perhaps be more readily compared to that of Brahms. The two became friends in 1853, with Schumann extravagantly praising the efforts of the young Brahms to anyone who would listen.
I find his thematic material to be fairly melodic, whilst seldom actually containing anything that I would consider to be a finished melody. Another way of saying that might be: 'although his stuff sounds quite nice, there's not much in it that you'd wind up humming or whistling all day long after hearing it once'.
I performed the first movement of his first violin sonata, in 1964 at Buckingham Palace, having learnt it just for the occasion. I performed the second sonata, in 1983 in Paris, again by request. As far as I can recall, I never played any of his music of my own volition. I certainly never looked at the violin concerto. Even as regards the famous 'FAE sonata', I only ever played the segment (Scherzo) provided by Brahms.
