Its a gesture of respect.
Those that forget history are in danger of repeating it. I think it is important to remember those that have died just as it's important to remember the criminals like Blair who in the case of the illegal Iraq invasion are in part responsible for soldiers' deaths.
An empty gesture? Personally I dont think so. Why do people go to funerals? The person's dead and unless you are a believer, they aren't going to know one way or another. Again, its about respect - the fact that someone's death does matter to you.
