Hungerford, Dunblane, now Whitehaven...

Really tragic news, 12 people shot dead this afternoon in Cumbria by some crazed nutter on a shooting rampage. This guy though, unlike Michael Ryan and Thomas Hamilton - the 2 scumbags who carried out the first two massacre's I have listed - was not some loner who had never achieved in life. This man, Derrick Bird, had a job as a self-employed taxi driver, and had just become a grandad. He is still a piece of shit though, like the other two, but I feel for his family. After massacring the 12 people today he shot himself dead. It is such a shame, this is the third massacre in Britain in 23 years. We have had more of these than many European countries have had....

Thing is he knew he was a piece of shit for doing it hence why he punked out and took his own life because to live through this and look at another human being in the eye would be like dying a thousand deaths every day.
I too feel sorry for the people he left behind who have to endure the shame he has put on them and you know that people will want someone to blame so they will on the people that were part of his life.
RIHF...Rot In Hell Fucker. You will always be remembered for being a cowardly punk for ruining the lives of all the people you needlessly wiped out when you should haver manned up and put a bullet through your own stupid head...You might have got a bit of respect in people actually feeling sorry for you then
Sorry there is nothing sad about his story other than the people he killed.

I'm still waiting on news as I have family in the immediate area (a cousin in Whitehaven, one in Seascale and two in Eskdale)
Max, I think you'll find that 3 massacres in 23 years, though 3 too many, is not quite as high as you make out. I can think of two in Finland in about 2007 and there were at least two in Germany this century too, last year and one in about 2006 I think.

Just curious - Does the UK still have heavy restrictions on gun ownership?
An odd thing happened back in 1996 when a loon in Tasmania shot 35 people in one afternoon at a tourist historical site (Port Arthur). The new Prime Minister at the time brought in new laws to further restrict what guns could be owned and even buy back all the ones that would become illegal during an amnesty. While there was general support for this, there were furious protests against him amid claims that he was taking away people's rights to defend themselves.
There were of course, the usual conspiracy theories that the whole massacre was staged to allow the Government to disarm the population prior to installing themselves as a dictatorship! Anyway, that Government was peacefully voted out in a free and fair election 3 years ago by people without guns.

This man was truly evil as we now have to sit thorugh vulture TV 24/7 as the news programs pick the bones of this nice simple to undertand and salacious event.
Its a terrible it happened but now expect knee jerk reactions from all those wanting air time.

Compared to most countries, the UK has very strong gun ownership laws (off the top of my head we have fewer than 5 legally registered guns per 100 people compared to 80+ per 100 in the US)
You're right, there will be the usual knee-jerk reactions from all those who want face time on the telly... just seen a guy from The Countryside Alliance defending the ownership of guns.
While I understand the need for farmers to have guns I do wonder why it was necessary for a taxi driver to have licences for a shotgun and a riffle?

Deano, after the Dunblane Massacre in Scotland in 1996 when Thomas Hamilton shot dead 16 children and their teacher they tightened up gun ownership in Britain a lot. I knew someone who was a member of a gun club and he had to hand in his weapsons (he was a member of one in the City of London which probably closed down because of the new legislation). We, from then on, had some of the toughest gun laws in the world and still do.
I remember the incident you refer to, when 35 people were killed in Tamsamia. A terrible event. Now this has happened in Whitehaven in Cumbria they will probably tighten up gun ownership even further - the problem is though that if you really want to get a gun illegally in order to kill people you always will. So banning them will have little effect.
