He actally thinks the immigration policy of Labour was wrong... but never spoke up when in power.... what a wimp!
All labour leader hopefuls are trying to re write the last 10/13 years....
"not me guv... honest"
" i wasn't even an MP when the war started"
" i never said you were all racists by wanting controlled immigration..."
What a bunch of sad, shallow individuals...

I agree. The most annoying thing about all this is there is nothing the public can do. An arrogant, out of touch, Government just does whatever it likes - against the wishes of everyone - and the public just have to put up with it. I feel very sorry for the next generation and the generation after that.

Balls is massively out of step with grassroots labour activists and labour mps. He should sod off to the BNP if he feels this way.

It is completely reasonable to be against mass immigration if there are clear negative things that happen as a result of that mass out of control immigration. People are only out of order to be critical of it if they have no argument, if they are just being bigoted, but if there are negative things then it's fine and fair to be critical. As I said just now though there is sod all anyone can do, we just have to put up with it.

Just got back from holiday and getting up to speed with what 's what.
The fat arrogant hypocritical arsehole Balls amazes me. 13 fucking years of fucking everything up and now the bastards have been booted out, not as hard as they fucking deserved mind, this useless article now says they got it wrong. Fuck me, is this the effect of losing an election that the losers admit they were wrong, even though the media and their constituents were telling them what was what?
Twattttts the fucking lot of em.
A lifelong Labour voter I have now changed sides since Tony B fucking Liar and the useless one eyed grumpy fucking jock.

"Immigration is bad..says Labour"
If Ed Balls has actually said that, could you please provide a link to the quote?
What he did say in an article in the Observer was ""There have been real economic gains from the arrival of young, committed and hard-working migrants from eastern Europe over the past six years,"
He then goes on to say "Labour was wrong to reject "transitional controls" in 2004 that would have prevented migrants working in Britain for a number of years". And although not elected to parliament until 2005, he was an economic adviser to Brown prior to that and recognises that he was part of that mistake. He also states that he took this view about immigration concerns with Brown over the last 18 months.
What he is referring to here is the restrictions on the number of Poles entering the country that many EU countries had placed as part of transitional arrangements. The government did not put in place these transitional arrangements which led to a huge influx of Polish workers - over a million.
He is also raising the issue about Turkish potential membership of the EU which has a bigger population than the UK, I think.
In terms of his views not being in touch with the grassroots, they are supported by unions such as Unite who have long campaigned on this topic.
So in short Balls is not saying immigration is bad, he is saying that the government should look at the whole topic of unfettered access for existing and new EU countries' populations. This seems pretty sensible to me to have a discussion about this.
Cheers

The problem is that they dont fuck off back after helping us out with our skills crisis (because thats why we neeeded them or so we keep getting told) infact they bring the rest of the family over adding to the pressure on all facets of society all so companies can pay less wages and make more profit for themselves while everyone else stciks up with the fallout.

Which is why Ed Balls is bringing up the issue of free movement of labour in the EU. It is far easier to defend free movement in boom times than than when the country has had a deep recession. It stands to reason that when you get much poorer countries joining the EU you will potentially get huge population movements particularly if it is from a country where the welfare state payments and wages are much lower.

All so true.
I am so glad I do not have children as I see few prospects for then to have a decent life and employment.
I have nearly 20 years working life before I can draw my pension. Assuming I can keep in employment until then and I can keep up payments into my private pension I do wonder if the fund will deliver the predicted purchasing value to add to the basic state pension to give a reasonable living.
As to proposals to raise the retirement age they ignore the fundamental issue of the current unemployment level and of course the unemployed are a huge drain on the country. However there seem to be no policies to create jobs and cut imports. Instead the politicians are continually looking for ways to tax businesses further thus decreasing their viability.
Basic food is an area where imports need to be cut. Pork & chicken from Germany & Holland as just examples. If we can not produce at the same cost this must be addressed.
We have lost manufacturing of consumer items, computers etc for ever but surely we can be far more self-sufficient.
An example is JCB. A recent news report stated that 30 years ago 90% of their components were UK sourced but now just 36%.
Back to the 1970's most cars, buses, lorries in the UK were UK built but now most are imported and why are new trains coming from Europe, USA/Canada and soon maybe China.
Propping up the fat cat bankers has been a massive cost too yet for example LDV vans was allowed to close while all the imports are distributed in Mercs, VW's, Peugeots, Toyota etc. when those who could be working at LDV are spend their days at home.
A drastic change is needed and fast but I see no prospects of it happening.
