Technical question if I may - a friend of mine is having a really difficult time at the moment re-editing some footage for 'television broadcast' - He's done such a good job on the actual shoot etc, that it's such a shame that after all his hardwork - it is taking so long to sort out the 'specified' requirements for TV broadcast and with much better equipment than some people have got ....(keep going mate, it'll sort itself out I'm sure)

My question is this:

There are 'professional' shot scenes/series broadcast on the various channels and again, obviously these are done with high quality cameras , good locations etc - but there are an equally large number of 'amatuer' shot scenes (hubby filming the wife)etc - solo or b/g stuff etc shot in living rooms, local hotels etc - now, both of these styles have to be broadcastable to appear on these channels - a number of the professionals will be using software such as 'final cut pro ' etc - are the amatuers using the same expensive kit ?, or is there standard software that will also allow the technical specs required to be included at the editing stages ?

A few that come to mind and are readily available to limited or zero budgets are :windowsmoviemaker,AVS video editor, AVS video converter etc.
are these equal to to the task? or are there others - that posters/producers etc on BGAFD are aware of?

You really need the functions of final cut studio, especially 'Color' when working to broadcast specs, as you'll need to get into grading to reach the final product quality demanded.

The cheap/free programs are ok for cutting a scene for a web clip, but really won't do for broadcast quality.

Thanks for that - what about 'Sony vegas pro' would that be any good?

Sorry, no idea, final cut seems to be the 'default' tool for high end editing, which is why 90% of the films at the Oscars edited with non-linear editing were cut using Final Cut Pro.
