I've just watched a very interesting documentary about Richard Nixon on BBC4. As he was leaving office following his resignation, and he remains the only American president to ever resign, he said this in a speech to his staff. The programme showed him saying it to them, and I have copied and pasted it from a page on the internet to ensure I got it right word for word:

?Remember, always give your best. Never get discouraged. Never be petty. Always remember, others may hate you. But those who hate you don't win unless you hate them. And then you destroy yourself.?

I think this is very true and very interesting. Many people could apply this to our attitude to life and our attitude to people we may be angry towards either currently or from times in the past who still bother us...

Just curious Max - was this documentary generally anti-Nixon? Or did it cover the good things he did as well as his naughty stuff ups?

I thought he got treated way too harshly over the Watergate affair compared to some of the things other senior politicians of his era did. Ted Kennedy was a cunt yet the left-wing media utterly kissed his arse. Carter was so bad, the yanks wouldn't touch the Democrats for 3 terms after him.

And Nixon's 'Ski-Jump' nose made a great dildo.

I do feel a little sorry for Nixon.

He is basically remembered for Watergate and resigning, but he did a lot of good things at that time.

Of course he always felt people were against him, and he was fighting "the world".

Compared, of course, to say JFK who was a handsome young man who it seems could do no wrong (no matter how many "bad" things he did).

Nixon sweated a lot which looked awful, a did not come across well on TV.

He closely lost a few early elections, particularly the 1960 presidental election against JFK (it was felt their was widespread fraud to get JFK elected, and JFKs father was alleged to have "bought" many votes via his criminal connections).

Having lost these earlier elections he was determined to not lose any more, but tried to "too hard" during the 1972 campaign (getting his "friends" to commit many illegal activities such as burglaries to find out all he could about his opponents).

Funny thing is he would have probably have been re-elected anyway in 1972, even without these illegal activities.

Of course once Watergate happened, and he tried to cover it up, he was doomed.
